How to Save a YouTube Video to Your Phone (iPhone & Android)
Learn how to save an authorized public YouTube video as an MP4 on iPhone or Android, find the file in Downloads, and choose a compatible quality for your phone.
Steps at a glance
- Open the public YouTube video you are allowed to save.
- Copy its video or Shorts link from the Share menu.
- Paste the link into video2mp4 and review the title and MP4 choices.
- Choose an available quality and select Save MP4.
- Find the completed file in your browser or phone's Downloads folder.
Before you copy a link
Make sure you are allowed to save the video. The easiest case is a video you uploaded yourself or one whose owner gave you permission to keep a copy. A public watch page is not, by itself, a license to distribute somebody else’s work. YouTube’s own help describes downloading your uploaded videos through Studio and also offers Google Takeout for an account archive. If those options meet your needs, they may provide a simpler record of your own uploads. This guide covers one eligible public video at a time through a browser.
Copy the address of one video
In the YouTube app, open the video and tap Share, then Copy link. For a Short, use Share on that Short; its link normally contains /shorts/ and a video ID. In a browser, you can also copy the full address from the location bar. A regular video often has a watch?v= parameter. Avoid copying a channel home page, search result, or playlist-only address. Those pages contain multiple items and do not identify the single video you want to save.
Open video2mp4.com in Safari or Chrome and paste the link into the field. If your clipboard is available to the browser, the Paste button can insert it for you. The field recognizes a supported YouTube address before submitting. If it does not, check that the video ID was not truncated by a message app. Pasting the title of a video is not enough; the tool needs its URL. A link to a video that only opens while you are signed in may still fail because the resolver does not use your YouTube account.
Pick an MP4 quality
After the link check, compare the returned title and thumbnail with the video you opened. The main Save MP4 button chooses the best eligible video format at or below 1080p. It may be lower if the original upload or current source provides less. More formats shows alternative file choices and explains when a choice exceeds the service’s size or duration limit. Select a smaller file when you have limited storage or data. Selecting MP4 does not make a low-resolution upload sharper.
Some YouTube formats have the picture and sound as separate streams. The site needs to prepare one MP4 before a browser download can begin. Leave the tab open while that preparation message is visible. Do not press the button several times; repeated requests can consume rate limits or create confusing duplicate downloads. When the file request starts, your browser handles the transfer. A 4K file, where available, can be slow to transfer and may use a codec that an older device does not play well. A compatible 720p or 1080p choice is often easier to use on a phone.
Find the file on iPhone
Safari usually stores downloaded files in a Downloads folder in the Files app. Open Files, tap Browse, then look in Downloads. Depending on your Safari settings, the folder may live on iCloud Drive or On My iPhone. The browser’s download arrow can show the transfer while it is active. A file does not automatically appear in the Photos camera roll just because it was downloaded from a web page. Open the MP4 in Files and use the iOS Share controls if you want to move a compatible video into Photos.
If you cannot find it, check Safari’s configured download location in Settings. Also confirm the file finished rather than stopping when the screen locked or the connection changed. An older iPhone may not play a high-resolution or newer-codec file smoothly. Return to the original video page, resolve it again, and choose a lower MP4 quality. A signed download address is temporary and tied to the original browser visitor, so an old copied transfer URL is not a reliable retry path.
Find the file on Android
Chrome and many other Android browsers provide a Downloads screen from their menu. The device’s Files or file manager app may show a Download folder too. The exact location depends on browser settings and whether storage is internal or on an SD card. A download notification indicates that a transfer started, not always that it finished. Open the file from Downloads only after completion. If a media player refuses to open it, try a compatible lower-quality option before assuming that no file was saved.
If something goes wrong
An invalid-link message means the field did not recognize a supported single-video URL. Copy the address again from the actual video. A private, deleted, or region-restricted error means the public resolver could not access the source; a different phone will not grant access. A rate-limit message includes a wait time. A security challenge is part of the service’s abuse protection, and a failed challenge can be retried once after completing it visibly. Repeatedly submitting the same restricted link is unlikely to help.
If the result appears but Save MP4 fails, check your connection and available storage. A temporarily unavailable relay can interrupt delivery even when video information was found. Wait briefly and resolve the original YouTube link again to request a fresh signed download. If only a 4K option fails to play, try a lower listed format. If the source video itself has no audio, changing download quality will not create sound. When you need a guaranteed master of your own work, use the original recording or YouTube’s uploader tools.
